As the leader in the text messaging industry, we are often being asked what is a push SMS, or push notification. What is the difference between a push SMS and an SMS text message? To know what is a push SMS, we’d better understand it from its difference from an SMS text message.

Differences Between Push SMS And SMS Text MessagesAn SMS text message is a text message that sends to the phone directly. 

A push SMS is a brief alert that is “pushed” through an app to phones that have downloaded the app, with or without the app being opened.

There are 4 differences between push SMSes and SMS text messages.

a. Receiving method

For SMS text messages, you need to have marketing text content and the phone numbers of your targeted customers, so that you can send the text messages and proceed with the marketing work.

For push SMS, you only need to have users that have downloaded the app, and you can send them push SMSes whenever you need. 

b. Delivery method

For SMS text message, it is delivered straight to the user’s phone. They don’t need to download any apps to receive it, and they can check the message anytime. 

For push SMS, it is delivered to the phone’s desktop or mobile device, and the app doesn’t necessarily have to be opened. Only that it is a one-time reading, the recipient couldn’t access it again. 

c. Reading frequency

For SMS text messages, the recipient can always see it the first time they receive it. 

For push SMS, it could be missed or ignored depending on how many push SMS the recipient is receiving. 

d. Message content

For SMS text messages, the content can be relatively long as up to 160 characters are allowed. You can write all sorts of content regarding your business, and you can even put a hyperlink in it.

For push SMS, it can only be a sentence or two in length, with limited information.
